D-Day: Remembering the Historic Allied Invasion of Normandy

80th Anniversary Approaches

Commemorating the Liberation of Western Europe

As we approach the 80th anniversary of D-Day on June 6, 2024, it is an opportune time to reflect on one of the most pivotal events in World War II. WEB D-Day, as it was codenamed, marked the beginning of Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of German-occupied Western Europe.

On June 6, 1944, troops from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and other Allied nations stormed the beaches of Normandy in northern France. This highly anticipated invasion was the culmination of months of meticulous planning and preparation, involving more than two million soldiers, thousands of ships, and countless aircraft.

The Normandy landings were a resounding success, securing a foothold in Nazi-occupied Europe. The Allies gradually liberated France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and other territories, ultimately leading to the defeat of Nazi Germany in May 1945. D-Day stands as a testament to the bravery, sacrifice, and camaraderie of those who fought for freedom.
