Italian Boxer Abandons Olympic Bout

Carini Quits After Hard Blow

Match Lasted Just 46 Seconds

PARIS, France (AP) — Italian boxer Angela Carini abruptly ended her bout against Imane Khelif of Algeria on Saturday, just 46 seconds into their women's 66 kg preliminary match at the 2024 Summer Olympics.

The sudden withdrawal came after Carini took a hard blow to the face in the first round. The Italian boxer immediately turned her back on her opponent and walked away from the ring, signaling her intention to quit the match.

Carini's decision to abandon the bout shocked the crowd and left Khelif, who had been barred from competing in the women's 66 kg event at the previous Olympics, visibly stunned.

Carini later explained that she had been suffering from a prior injury and felt unable to continue after the blow. The Italian boxer said she was "heartbroken" to have to abandon her Olympic dream but that her health came first.
