CDC and FDA Investigate Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Cucumbers

449 People Sickened, Second Grower Identified

Investigations Continue

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Africana linked to cucumbers.

449 Cases Reported

As of September 15, 2023, the CDC has received reports of 162 people in 25 states and the District of Columbia who have been infected with this strain of Salmonella. Of those, 57 have been hospitalized and one person has died.

Second Grower Identified

The FDA has identified Bedner Growers Inc. of Boynton Beach, Florida, as a supplier of cucumbers in this outbreak. This is the second grower to be identified, the first being Thomas Farms of Georgia.

Traceback Investigation Ongoing

The FDA's traceback investigation is ongoing to determine the source of the contamination and identify any other potentially affected products.

Symptoms of Salmonella Infection

Symptoms of Salmonella infection include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches

Advice to Consumers

Consumers are advised to avoid consuming cucumbers from Bedner Growers Inc. and Thomas Farms.

If you have any cucumbers from these farms, discard them immediately.

Thoroughly clean and disinfect any surfaces that may have come into contact with these cucumbers.
