Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur Clinch Knockout Stage Berths
Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur secured their places in the UEFA Europa League Round of 16 after impressive performances on Thursday.
José Mourinho's United cruised to a comfortable 5-0 victory over Real Sociedad at Old Trafford, while Antonio Conte's Spurs earned a hard-fought 2-1 win against Rangers at Ibrox.
United Dominate Sociedad
- Marcus Rashford scored twice, including a stunning free-kick.
- Bruno Fernandes added a goal and an assist.
- Alejandro Garnacho and Anthony Elanga also found the net.
United controlled the match from start to finish, dominating possession and creating numerous chances.
Spurs Edge Rangers
- Richarlison opened the scoring for Spurs in the first half.
- Rangers equalized through Ryan Kent early in the second half.
- Harry Kane scored the winning goal in the 58th minute.
The match was more closely contested than United's victory, but Spurs ultimately deserved the win thanks to their clinical finishing.
Mourinho and Conte Pleased
Both managers expressed satisfaction with their teams' performances.
"I'm very happy with the players' attitude and performance," said Mourinho. "We played with great intensity and quality."
"We showed great character and determination," added Conte. "It was a tough game, but we deserved the win."
